Rachana, it really depends on what you feel happiness means.
I am appalled at the condition of the world and the things so many suffer through. I see and hear of so many tragic events and sadness with many innocent people.
Im not happy about that.
But I am happy that I have a heart to care about others, I am happy that even though tragedy has stuck within my life I have survived and learned from it. If I had not survived others would have learned from that. So I am happy about that.
I am happy that I can wake and take charge of my life and work my way around any barrier that is placed before me. I am not happy when I fail but I am happy when I pick myself up and continue forward towards my goal, having learned from the past setback
I may seem unhappy when I cry but I can always look back on those tears and be happy that I have the emotions inside to feel sadness.
I am happy. Its just what you make of it.

rachana,
people are always looking for material things to find happiness. they are trying to get money, then more money whether they require it or not is a separate issue. one house to live in is enough but more houses (as if they will live in all the houses), not one car but more cars, not some clothes but many clothes than branded ones then imported ones etc, fulfilment of their dreams which may be even more foolish. they always want something or the other but never want to give anything to anyone. they do not donate money/clothes/food etc which will bring a smile to the face of a needy individual or a child. they are never satisfied with what they have got. they want things to make them happy but things do not make a person happy.
happiness is in feeling the fresh air on your face, smell of the flowers, easiness on the mind, sound sleep, days with out medication, bringing a smile to someones face and little things like helping others getting their blessings will also lighten you . once a person is at peace with himself then he/she is happy. he/she smiles often and others on seeing him/her also smile in return. he/she thus spreads goodwill/happiness all around and is like sunshine in other peoples lives.

i am actually very happy with my life. not always content with status quo but i am happy. it is being contentment that is a struggle because you always want more. even when you make goals and complete them all, you just make higher goals. this is partially because our lives are always changing. the house i purchased 8 yrs ago is no longer something i am content with although at one time it was my dream home. the house has not changed and neither have i, but my family has. 8 yrs ago i had a 3 yr old and a newborn so our house seemed big and the kids didnt care about the size of their rooms. now that they are older and taking up more space, my house appears to be shrinking. and no one is willing to take the smaller bedroom but everyone wants their own space. so when life changes we must make new goals. now i am buying a large home knowing it will eventually be too large but that doesnt mean that i wont be happy.

Not everyone, but most of the people in this world are unhappy. The reason is simple yet complex. We human beings are actually very thankless kind of people at our hearts. We may thank someone for its offerings, we may thank God for offering us a wonderful gift but that's only verbal. If yo ureally wanna tahnk someone do something for him/her. If you really wanna tahnk God do something for Him. But we won't. Whenever it's our turn to pay for a favor, we start complaining that it was the other persons or God's duty, or he/she is just trying to earn some points, or they could have done better, or probably they are selfish and they helped us out cos they wanted something from us. And if in case we offer some help to others or do something remarkable for any of the cretions of God we start boasting about it. As if we are the only ones who are pure at heart.
How can one be happy if he stays like that. Cos at the bottom of your heart, you know what's wrong. At the bottom of our heart we are always discotnent cos we know we haven't carried out our duties perfectly. Instead we always have high expectations from others.
We are unhappy not because others act in an uncanny manner but because we are selfish and egoistic. Once we start performing our duties towards all the creations of the God honestly, we would never find any instance of unsatisfaction within ourselves.
:-)

Rachna, this is a material world, therefore whenever people achieve any thing they are happy. Since the demand for other achievements gets the better of us , we once again consider ourselves unhappy. This is a vicious circle and as such we find ourselves in both state of mind at different times. Finally, the pursuit of material achievement is everlasting, so no one is having ever lasting happiness.

Because:
1. They have not defined it for themselves. Happiness is subjective and people need to define it first before trying to achieve it.
2. People are confusing apples with oranges. Happines is an internal state of mind while people oscillate with external activities while trying to find it.
3. People need their happiness "certified" by other people who are often critical and manipulative, ruining their happiness. So when you find happiness thank yourself and move on.

Not all people are happy for many different reasons.
Some people lack the basics of life. Some people have a hard time dealing with life.
Luckily most people are happy some of the time.

Because of rasism. No one wants to accept others for their belifes or opionins, even skin color and country. I can't trust anyone anymore. I can't stand the world, people hate me at school for being Wiccan and not going with the flow and being Christian. Its like we've gone back 2,000 years! Even sexists are showing their ugly heads.

This is because we humans are very selfish and greedy too and always want more than we can handle. Due to this we are always thinking that what to get and how to get and as soon as possible. In this way we get tensed, hence we get angry, upset,short-tempered etc. and the result we are not / never happy.
