this site has some usefull information about the atmosphere at the time, and those countries involvement,,,,,,, they each had disputes of their own with Britain,,,, so helping us in a way served their own needs,,,,,, i think that would be a main part of the correlation to how we help today,,,,,, often we see it as being in our own best interest, or those who we help are fighting against someone/country we are opposed to
