Emo kids are NOT nonconforming.
If an emo, or anyone for that matter, fits into a social group or label they are NOT nonconforming.
A nonconformist is someone who, unintentionally, is impossible to categorize. Clearly the emo kids don't fit this description.
And as for the kids who really are emotional, they rarely fit in with the so-called "emo" group.

Because... like... no one else ever does it. It's original. I don't care if a million other kids in this town do it. It's still unique.

It's because to be non-conforming, you must conform. To not eat fries, you must eat them. To not get a hair cut, you must first get it cut. You get the idea.
Personally, I would like to see a non conformist actually not conform. You know, like wearing pink and purple stripes with a blue and red jacket with a yellow skirt over orange and green striped tights. Oh, yeah, they should be listening to Kidz Bop while doing the sprinkler. That non-conformist enough?
Come to think of it, it doesn't sound like a bad idea.

When it becomes trendy to be non-conforming we get the paradox of the conforming non-conformist. Going against the norm is now the new norm. Emo kids are united by all their depressing music from bands with long meaningless names and girly voices. They use their tight pants, messenger bags, and flippy styled hairdos to signal to other emo kids that they want to cry about how hard it is to live with your parents and the price of hair gel. I wouldn't call them rebels, just poor mopey wannabe punks.

That's an easy one. As anarchic or non-conformist as they, (or anyone for that matter) claim to be, they are still human. Humans are social animals. It's literally and, barring acute psychosis, inescapably in our nature.
