First tell him that he doesn't have to whisper the word. You don't want him to develop a sense of shame about safe sex and being responsible.
That said...
How much have you told him about sex at this point? The answer you give him should have about the same depth. You can keep the answer simple like 'It helps grownups when they don't want to make a baby yet' or slightly more detailed like 'It's a latex tube that fits on a grownup penis and it protects from germs when adults have sex.'
It really just depends on how much information you want him to have at his age.

You don't say what his question was, I assume something like "What's a condom?" Just start with a simple answer, Condoms are something adults use sometimes. If he asks why, tell him to protect them from diseases. You don't have to tell him what kind or even where it goes. If he says something off-the-wall about wanting one to keep him from getting sick, you get to change the topic to nutrition and how you choose to eat well and take vitamins to keep from getting ill. Ask him what kind of foods he likes to eat, topic changed, he has a minimal amt of info about the topic, and you've played it cool.
Don't give him more info than he's actually asking for. Don't freak out or say nothing because suddenly you've made it much more interesting in his eyes (ooh, something that makes mom upset!) Set a healthy foundation now for better discussion later on.
