They couldn't But sometimes people forget that not everybody can use public transport anyway.

I can't easily at all

instead of 40 Min's to get to and fro in the car would take 2 hours to get there then 4 to get back, as there is limited service where i live and work,

Spose it will teach me for living and working out in the sticks,

I for one would be late for work as no public transport runs at the time of the morning that I would need it.

I would also be nearly an hour later home in the evening.

Public transportation does not have the capacity to transport an entire metropolitian city on any one given day. Id be happy if the city I lived in had bus routes in more places than just "downtown".

Not a hope. Buses are few and far between where I am. And in rural areas they're rarer than hens' teeth. It's no wonder people use cars when they'd have to walk along country roads with no proper pavement and little streetlighting to get to public transport.

I think it depends on the city. I think NY can probably handle it because most people take the subway system anyway. But for cities like Los Angeles, it probably can't handle it because too many people drives in LA, and the sudden onslaught of passengers would make the buses grind to a halt.

Answer = no

I used to work for public transit agency.

The motorways are built to handle peak usage (aka "rush hour"). The public transportation system is not built this way.

As a bus driver I would say no, as the time table is set up so that each bus is full, to maximise profits, so I would have to leave people behind however the people that were on the bus would get to work early, as the idiots who feel the need to use their car to travel a half mile to work would be absent.

it would never happen, public transport isn't up to it, also many school children would't get to school as many parents drive them to school as they are too far away to walk & there is no public transport in rural areas, not only that public transport doesn't run 24/7 many people work shifts or nights

no not a chance, i doubt we would even get to work that day at all which sometimes isnt a bad idea. its over crowded as it is at the moment without a proposed day of public transport.
