Is their people (working for the airport) that travel with children to make sure that they get to their right destination?

(My 14 year old wants to go to California, would this be safe, or is their a better way, I'm not able to travel with her).

Call the airline to book her ticket(instead of booking it on line) and let them know that it's a minor traveling on her own. When you check her in at the airport, she will be handed over to an attendant. The person picking her up will receive her from an airport personnel. I did this with my baby sister, and it was an international flight. Make sure she has reading materials and a favorite handheld game and(or) a mp3 player. She will be fine.

Go to one of the airline websites and look for a link to Children Flying Unattended. I believe all US carriers have a policy regarding this. I think they are given attendants at both ends of the flight to keep them safe in the airports, and the flight crew keeps special watch on those kids designated as unattended. They may even allow you to accompany your child onto the plane, but that would be the government's decision.

Hey Nicki

Nope, airlines used to provide that service but they don't anymore.

however, most airlines will have an on-board stewardess take charge of your Daughter and make sure she is picked up by the proper person at the destination end. You should check on this well in advance of going to the airport to ensure that your selected airline will do it.

You must also ensure that a responsibility person will meet your Daughter at her destination. The airlines are normally pretty sticky on this requirement.

Good Luck!

Most airlines have staff to accompany or assist minors travelling alone. In airline speak --UM unaccompanied minor. I've seen lots of kids travelling alone being helped onto planes, off planes, escorted through the airport until they are met by whomever is to meet them. You just need to tell the airline in advance.

Check with the airline in question. No specific person will be designated to fly with the child. The Flight attendants will escort the child to the baggage area. Check for procedures when child id waiting to board.
