Check out on line sites that sell memory for a picture of what the card will look like. Search for DDR memory. - browsing the memory that is for sale will give you an idea of the different possibilities. Or call the manufacturer. Some manuals also contain the technical information.
Open the box. Watch out for static. Make sure you don't have static generating clothes on. touch the case before touching the cards. Note: may void your warranty.
Find the card (green usually) that looks like the pictures. Should have something like DDR PC3200 or some such on it
There are several things you need to know: size of card that will fit into your PC, size of memory you want to upgrade to 512, 1024, 2048, 4096. speed of memory PC2100 or PC 3200 or PC4800, etc. (theres another way of stating the speed, but I'm keeping it simple), number of pins (connectors) and if there is an empty slot available. If not then you'll have to replace the current card. If so I've heard that memory works best in pairs of the same size. Usually ther are tabs on the ends that you unclip to remove the board to inspect it closely. All the memory I've ever looked at was marked as to what it was, even 20 years ago! Count the number of pins but treat the card very gently, do not bend it, hold by its edges only do not touch the metal. Clean hands. pins are also called edge connectors they are the little gold or silver rectangles along one edge of the card. Most of this information should be available right on the card so counting should be a last resort.
Once you've purchased the right card (store clerk should be able to match it if you bring in the old one - handle with care! Fragile - but not so fragile that you cant wrap it in paper towles (less static than plastic) and take it in if in doubt. Just plug them (or it) back in and it should be easy from there. Make sure to press down firmly but straight down so you dont bend the cards. If the clips/tabs don't fasten then they are not seated right. Watch as you boot up and you can check to make sure all the memory is there at system set up. Usually a notice of a memory change shows on the screen for a second at boot. I hit F2 (?) to see if the computer is seeing all of the additional memory.
Often the ads are for pairs of cards like a 512 RAM package might be 2 x 256 meg cards - so you need to kow how many memory slots you have available. Anyways so buying 512 might mean the 256 you already have should be tossed ( or kept as a back up) if there are only two slots (total) available. Frankly, I avoid paired cards if I have toidscard good memory. Its all a question of cost.

You first have to ensure that your motherboard can accept more RAM, and the type and speed of the RAM that is compatible with your motherboard. Assuming that you are referring to a PC, you then need to remove the side panel, in most cases, of the tower and press down of both sides of the retaining clip on the memory slot. The chip should pop-up easily. Line up the new chip properly ensuring that the notche(s) in the center of the chip lines up with the notche(s) on the memory slot and press down firmly. The new chip should snap into place. If you are finding it difficult to snap the chip into place, it probably means that the chip is being installed incorrectly. Dont force the chip in. You will have irreversible damage.
If you are using a different model computer, please state.

Its not that difficult, open up the computer, on the motherboard inside there are slots. Your existing ram will look like a strip that is already plugged into the motherboard. You will notice the empty slots. Take the serial Number off your existing ram and take that with you to purchase more ram. When you get it, it just pluggs in the existing slotts on the motherboard. Take care Heather

Take your computer to a professional, many computer stores will install ram that you buy from them, free of charge. This would be good for multiple reasons
1. your letting someone who knows what they are doing handle it.
2. If the RAM is defective usually you can get it replaced immediately rather than finding out later.
3. You can ensure you are buying the correct type if one doesn't work they can select a different kind.
4. If they screw it up and wreck it they are liable (Usually)

Do not try this if you have never handled a screw driver before. Depends on your computer, if it is laptop, RAM can be easily added by opening the back side with a screw driver.
You really need to look at the user guide for your computer or search for it online.
If added incorrectly RAM could actually damage your mother board.

go to crucial.com and then put all your computers information in then it would tell you how much ram your computer can hold after that make sure what kind it need then go to start menu and right click on my computer and then a windows will appear an an will show you how much ram you already have so then substart the totals computer ram that you got from crucial from the one you already have an that will tell you how much you have left . here a video on how to install ram in your computer just ignore the little thing he puts in his hand just make sure that you touch the metal in side the tower so you wont electrocute the ram. also (heads up) take out the ram out of your computer and when you have done that rap it around towel paper and take it carefully to the store where your going to buy the ram and tell them you want more ram and tell them how much and also show them the one yyou have so that they will know what kind you need and it might be hard to find the kind you need becasue each computer uses different kinds that what happened to me once i had to go to like 5 stores but i finally found it ok

Most motherboards have 2 or 4 memory slots which come from the factory half full. You just add a memory piece that matches the existing one.
