I agree with the fellas on this one. The producer (as I understand it to be) is responsible the integration of the parts of the song. In rap music, there is little need for live instruments, but even if there are live instruments, the producers puts the track music together for the artist. The artist lays his voice to the track and the producer makes sure that the final product is flawless. This can range from altering voices, shifting voice patterns to fit the music better, and finalizing the original song or prototype. I would say that they are like directors for music.

Well, the producer is usually the person with the collateral and the clientele that is supposed to help the artist finalize his or her project. Some producers, like myself compose the music, yet I allow the artist to write their own lyrics.

Some producers demand total control so you must do as he says. Some may be more flexible. Those are the types of producers you need.

If the producer has his own publishing then he will get a percentage of all the royalties depending on how the song gets radio,tv and commercial play.

He makes the beat...might also contribute to the hook...he is what used to be known as a composer...he might get paid before hand and get like 10 to 15 percent of the royalties...or up to 50 pecent, depending on how much clout he has...or if he used samples...there are some producers such as Timbaland or Jazze Pha who play instruments...they end up making alot of money...sometimes they have records composed with hooks and everything...The Neptunes are famous for that...artists come to them for hits...executive producer like P Diddy is the most coveted title...you select the sounds and dictate the lyrics as well as contribute to the artist's image...hardly ever touching a studio board or making a beat...Diddy dose'nt play instruments or program beats...he provides a "vision" and crafts sounds by listerning to tracks or vocals...giving his opinions and suggestions...he is actually a A& R or marketing exec turned C-E-O

One thing I know is that the producer makes the beats and helps the artist structure the song and chorus. I would recommend you go on www.youtube.com and type in "Pharrell at Work". It is a 9 minute video of Pharrell producing a song for an artist. Great Video

for rappers he/she makes beats or adds lyrics to beats pre-made and samples. for rock and country they find lyrics and/or music to go with the artist lyrics or music. most producers get paid per beats and some by precentage of sales.
