My ancestors were in the Italian royal family?

They are sort of distantly related to me, like a cousin several times removed.

It depends on exactly who it is and how you are related. If it's a cousin who is several times removed, you do not descend from them so they would not be an ancestor of yours. The person would just be a relative. They may be partially or mostly Italian but you may not be at all. Any cousin relationship does not mean you two share all the same blood. Even if your first cousin was Italian royalty, it does not mean you have Italian blood. If your family is French and your aunt (French) marries an Italian man their child (your cousin) would be half French/half Italian. You would still just be French. When you start talking about cousins who are 'removed' you are just talking about the children of your cousins. The relationship gets stretched even further. You can only find shared blood when you pinpoint who the common ancestor is. If the common ancestor is Italian, than you are Italian. If you already know the nationality/ethnicity of all your grandparents and great grandparents, etc. and none of them are Italian, then you do not have Italian blood.

As for royalty, all the royals from European countries intermarried anyway. Charles Emmanuel IV (King of Sardinia) from the late 1700s was the son of an Italian king who was at least half German himself and Infanta Antonia of Spain. His ancestors were also French and he is a descendant of Charles I of England.

If it's in your blood, it's in your blood! :)

Personally if I was in a situation like that, I wouldn't say that I was Italian, I'd say "I have Italian ancestors" since it's such a distant relation, y'know?
