Yes it was very sad i found myself crying for him, poor kid. and yes that sort of thing does happen its just that we dont really know about it and the ones who do try to keep it under wraps thats why this sort of book is great, it raises awareness and shows us terrible things like that are really happening. Knowledge is the only thing that can help abused kids mabey the next mother who chooses to do such cruel things to her children wont be so lucky because we are more aware of it.

believe it! I have been a foster parent for 3 years and the storys that the caseworkers tell me that these kids go through are amazing that they still can have a somewhat existance that may be considered normal once they are rescued. but be assured there are MORE kids that are not "saved" as there are those that have been put in the foster system.....Then alot of those kids that go into the foster system become more abused by the foster parents. That is the reason I went into foster parenting because my father was a statistic and I wanted to make a difference. Many kids don't get foster parents trying to do that they get the ones that are in it for the money and continue to victimize these poor battered and abused little souls

Yes, i did read A Child called it and David Peltzers 2 other books as well. In order to find junival records you would need a court order since all of the California juvinal record are private and can not be looked at without a court recommendation.

I too read the entire book in just one sitting. I could not put it down. It is such a shame that a child could go through so much. But on the bright side, he grew up to not only be a successful writer, but to write and share this tragic story so that abuse is brought into the forefront. I found it fascinating how the child can both love and fear the abuser. And indeed felt guilty about the way in which the abuse ended. I am married to a man who was abused as a child and it really is something that never goes away. i am thankful to know that books like these are widely read and appreciated. Too bad the laws for child abuse aren't more strict.

I read this book quite some time ago after my daughter came across it. (No pun intended) I was not suprised to find that there was rampant abuse of in the Foster Care system that would come to light every now and then in the media. I am from California and know of the cities in which he references throughout the book. It is a sad commentary on today's society as we look upon the outcast children so easily abandoned as a result of an unwanted pregnancy, drugs, or poverty. I do believe it stands as a testament of ones own strength's to overcome hardship and adversity. It is well that Mr. Pelzer wrote his books to highlight this and perhaps help to change the system that has such serious flaws. You may want to read the others in his series as well. "The Lost Boy and A Man Called Dave".

I've read the books, the two most amazing things to me is that
1)he survived to become a non-abusive adult
2)the other children stayed with the mother

I can't help but think today if the case had been reported all the kids would have been taken away. But that not how things were done then.

I though all of David Pelzers books were fantasic, sad and insightful. I read the first of his brother, Richard's books, and couldn't feel the same way. As harsh as this sounds, I honestly think he sounded like he was grandstanding and trying to blame his issues on what happened to his brother. Awful, I know
