The "hold" switch is so that the buttons don't accidentally get
pushed. Like if you put it in your purse or backpack, it doesn't
accidentally get turned on and run your battery down.

The Hold Switch it for let's say you went Jogging and you have your Ipod shaking around in its case you don't want to accidently change the song or a major setting on the Ipod

the hold switch is the button on the top of the iPod and it is used so that other bottons don't get pushed when you are traveling without directly holding it, the others answers are also very correct

is the one that should be in the top of the ipod next to the headphones connection or at the other side, but i think in almost every model (of ipod, nano and video) is on the top of the ipod
