The "laugh track" was invented by engineer Charley Douglass. It was first introduced to U.S. "viewing" audiences in 1950 on NBC's "The Hank McCune Show".

I think its somekind of a sound system. You know how on some of those electronic keyboards they have different sound effects. I think its something like that thats used for the background effects of some sitcoms. Unless there is a live studio audience, and even then they have a monitor that tells them when to laugh. Good question btw.

It was an old time radio comic, either Jack Benny or Bob Hope (I forget which). I heard him tell the whole story in an interview. He talks about a time when they were rehearsing a radio program and one of the guests was not getting good laughs from the audience. Bob (or Jack) went to the producer and said, "Hey, let me go back out there and give them my such-and-such routine. It's always good for lots of laughs. You just record the laughs and play some of it back while so-and-so does his routine."

I think it was Desi Arnez or someone during that time period.
I am a big "I Love Lucy" fan and have some Lucy movies
some that have "behind the scenes" I think it was Lucy's husband or someone who worked for them that invented the laughter.

i think it's the people who wrote the scripts. they were probably worried that people wouldn't know those were jokes so they gave us some "hints"
