A 10 gallon tank is a good size for a small community of tetras. They are colorful, small and peaceful fish as a rule. Neons, penguins, glo-lights, head and tail lights, just to name a few. Get any tetra that grows to less that 1 1/2" or so and get them in a group of at least 4 for best results. Instead of an algae eater you might consider a dwarf cory catfish or two. They are neat and will help control algae a bit.

Guppies, platys and mollies are also good bets for a 10 gallon tank. they are colorful and hardy little fish.

If you really want something special, you might look into Killifish. They are hard to find in pet stores, but easy to get mail order. Do a google search for pictures ... I doubt you will find a more colorful group of fish anywhere. They are a little harder to keep than the above mentioned fishes, but if you read up on them they shouldn't give you any trouble at all.

If you want to investigate Killifish, you need to join the AKA (American Killifish Association). hat will give you access to all the help you need plus great sources for the fish themselves.

Best of luck!

fresh water, easy care fish: guppies, mollies

tetras are a little more difficult to care for and need more room than a 10 gal tank as they are schooling fish

DO Not combine gold fish with tropicals, the amount of ammonia given off by gold fish kill tropical fish

algea eaters can live with all the different varieties of fish

Well it depends on what type of tank you have freshwater or saltwater. Freshwater they have fish called tetras that come in different colors and are very pretty. Putting a gold fish in the tank will give it sort of a classic feel. But as far as putting a algea eater in the tank will help it greatly because they will clean up the algea in the tank, but if there is not enough algea in the tank you need to give him algea tablets. As far as a shrimp I have never had one so I cant give advice on that.
