The First world war did have impact on the women in Britain. one immediate effect was that many young women had their engagement, marriage and other plans thwarted because their prospective spouses were assigned to the front. Some only had to postpone their plans; others who were not so fortunate lost their loved ones. On the contrary, some women actually rushed ahead with their engagement or marriage plans, to wed their hubbies before they went into battle! Battles during WWI like the (infamous) Somme for example resulted in severe loss of life. Again, many an Estate or household in Britain lost their favourite sons, heirs etc. Many women (mothers) grieved deeply at their loss. The young ladies, whose fathers died at the Somme and other battles, unfortunately grew up without fathers. If you asked me, WWI showed how courageous British women were in adapting to and enduring all the changes; and sadly, it was a precursor to WWII, where they were put to the test yet again!
