The world's best-selling album cannot be listed officially, since there is no international body to count global record sales. Historical data before the 1980s and from developing countries are also incomplete. Information is also lacking for non-English language albums.
With available data, most lists made appear as or close to the one below.
1) The Eagles: Their Greatest Hits - 1976
2) Michael Jackson: Thriller - 1982
3) Pink Floyd: The Wall - 1979
4) Led Zeppelin: IV - 1971
5) AC/DC Back in Black -1980
6) Billy Joel: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II - 1985
7) Shania Twain: Come on Over - 1997
8) Fleetwood Mac: Rumors - 1977
9) The Beatles: White Album -1968
10) Soundtrack: The Bodyguard - 1992

In the United States it was the Eagles' "Greatest Hits".
Here's the quote from Wikipedia:
"Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) is the first greatest hits compilation by the American band Eagles, released in 1976. (see 1976 in music).
This album was the first ever to be certified platinum for shipping one million copies and was later certified diamond. It has since shipped more than 29 million copies and is the best selling album of all time in the United States. The worldwide sales of Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 are in excess of 41 million copies.[1]"
Internationally I'd say it was MJ's "Thriller" although I've never looked at its numbers.
"Thriller" is the best-selling album worldwide. Here's the quote from Wikipeida:
"According to the Guinness Book of Records, Thriller is the world's all-time best selling album, with sales estimated at over 104 million copies.[2]. The album's achievements are notable as it is one of only three albums to remain in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 for one full year (along with Falling Into You by Celine Dion and Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette), spending 80 consecutive weeks in the Top 10."

It has to be the Thriller album. It still stands with the record of most albums sold nationally and worldwide. Over 150 million sold.

I'm not sure, but I do know that Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" is in the Guennis Book of Wolrd Records for staying at the top the longest. It is over 10 years.
