what are the factors that affect students in oral english

I will make a short list for you. (15 years experience)

1. Try NOT to let the students see the English word in print before thye practice it orally for a while. (English spelling and pronunciation have very many exceptions). After the student says, "Does he wear glasses?".... later he can read it. Otherwise it becomes, "Dooze hay weee -r glahsays?"

2. Practice often the differences between similar words. Ship - sheep. Skirt - shirt. Where were we in war? Where do you wear a wire ? AND students like tounge twisters. They will have some in their own language.

3. Stress the fact that IF the student pronounces the words correctly, then they will understand the same words coming from a native speaker. PRONUNCIATION is always more important than grammar, when it comes to being understood.

4. Students are reluctant to make mistakes in front of other students. If a student can't pronounce "Th" (this that those these Thursday) move on to another subject and try it again another day. Don't ever embarrass students. All students are capable of pronouncing ALL languages with some effort and time.

I'm still criticized for my Spanish "rr" and my French "on" and "vous" and "vu".

good luck. Trevor

well #1 you gotta socialize with people #2 watch movies or HBO it really works, I have a student she's Chinese and just watching she really elevated her skills in understanding and speaking...well atleast she tries=) #3 self-study maybe with translation, it's not necessary to have perfect grammar at first but someone will correct you then you'll know. Just be outrageous sometimes and blab all you want even in broken oral way then you'll have courage. #4 just be confident, atfirst it maybe scary and tense then eventually you'llget used to it!
