To get a Ph.D. in psych, you need to take a fair amount of psychology coursework at the undergraduate level (you don't have to major in psych...just have the coursework). From there, you apply to graduate programs within a specific area of psychology (clinical, developmental, social, etc.). Typically, you'd want to get into a terminal Ph.D. program instead of a terminal master's program (where you'd stop after your master's degree then have to apply elsewhere for the Ph.D.).

Once in grad school, you take additional coursework and do a lot of research within your given field. Some Ph.D. programs will have you complete a master's thesis (thus earning your master's degree), but not all. Sometime after your master's, or the first 2-3 years of your program, you will take a comprehensive exam of your field to advance to Ph.D. candidacy. Assuming you get past that hurdle, then you focus on the research and writing for your dissertation. Generally, it will take anywhere from 4-8 years of study AFTER getting your bachelor's degree to earn a Ph.D.

"It's the same BS, just Piled Higher and Deeper.... "

It's a degree that you can get by attending college for 8 years... if you stay really focused. If you choose to actually have a life while attending college, it usually takes 10 years or so...
