PVA glue which is a white water based glue which dries clear can be thinned to use as a cheap glaze or varnish to protect a painting. It can be mixed with paint to give a thick textured look or to add glitter, gem stone, scraps of paper or fabric.

PVA will not stick to polythene so you can mix coloured inks with it and put a layer on a polythene sheets. When it it dry it can be cut into shapes.
