Because the government controls it and wants to control the population. On top of that bad news sells. No one is going to buy newspapers which contain news about how a parent was taken care of by their child or how a parent bought their kids some birthday gifts.....The onus is on the people to fully investigate what the media has reported and that is the only way the people can be enlightened.

Television, radio, print... most large media outlets generate a lot of their money from advertisements. The larger the company that wants to advertise, the larger the advertisement. The large, flashy advertisements that take up valuable advertising space cost a lot of money. Therefore, the larger the company, the bigger the money coming in from those advertisements.

We are seeing a trend in modern economy where large entities have acquired and manage multiple corporations by means of mergers and/or acquisitions. For example, Time/Warner, Clear Channel, Conde Nast own a vast majority of the major media outlets in radio, TV, and print.

These companies generate a lot of money through their advertisements and this revenue is shared with their stock holders. Essentially the stock holders share in the profit made from these giant companies - the more money the media companies make, the more money goes to the stockholders.

Some (or most?) of these stockholders have ties and affiliations to other groups, such as government, religious institutions, etc.

If a news article is shown to hinder or reveal aspects of the truth that advertisers and stock holders do not want to reveal, advertisers can show their dissent by pulling away. Basically, this would be a boycott - advertisers pull out, the media outlet loses money, the stock holders lose money, so the stock holders may pull out as well.

Basically, if they publish a story that the money-makers don't like, the money-makers make the media outlet lose money, and everyone in the chain loses.

In order to maintain their current position, most media will "spin" the truth to make it look more favorable to those who keep the media gaining money.

The " truth "is of no importance for the Media...notice that each media source (tv,radio, newspaper) has their own slant/political agenda, this because various owners/publishers want their personal/group purpose projected to the numb minded and generally stupid public, whereby the " Power of Suggestion " carries the day. Manipulation of this sort has always be a key political and corporate tool, and a very successful one with the masses.

So our government, who controls the media, can let people know only what they want people to know. If the media told the people the truth, there would be outrage.

better ratings. Understand, the news as it origionaly happens is ho humm to reporters. they have to beef it up for that pat on the back from the boss or to prove he is better than the next reporter.
while all of this goody goody is going on, the vallitidy of the story as it origionaly happened, gets ignored. It gets replaced with a story that they feel ought to be used

The media plays what entertains people most and what they are paid to say. The biggest mistake is to assume that they are telling you the truth.

Because they , like in war stories, can only tell what the GOVERNMENT SAYS IS TRUE, or what the Governments VERSION of the truth is...
Plus for ratings, we live in a world of lies.
