... enormous pearl necklaces, beautiful high-necked lace blouses .... and her hair upswept? I just can't remember who she was and seaches have led me down blind alleys. I think she lived in the early part of the 20th century, but I am not sure.

Thank you!
Love & Peace.

I wonder if you're thinking of Queen Alexandra (1844 - 1925), who was queen consort of Edward VII of Great Britain and mother of George V. She was the daughter of Christian IX of Denmark and was married to the then-Prince of Wales in 1863, while mother-in-law Queen Victoria was still in mourning. She's known for founding Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps. Although I'm inclined to agree with those who suggest her daughter-in-law: Mary of Teck (Queen Mary), who was a very grand lady, if rather severe. They both wore high-necked blouses, but I particularly remember seeing a photograph of Mary wearing a large pearl choker. Although her hair wasn't upswept, the styling could have given the illusion of being upswept, especially when wearing a tiara.

It cannot be Queen Mary, She was very grand and dignified and my favourite Royal, but you would never see Her with Hair unswept!
It must be Her mother in law, the one and only Queen Alexandra, both She and Queen Mary dressed in a similar fashion, especially with the diamond and pearl chokers. However Queen Alexandra (compared to Princess Diana of her day) was often photographed with her long hair in a natural pose. Queen Mary had curly or permed hair.

It might have been Queen Mary - Elizabeth II's grandmother. There is a famous photo of the three Queens at the funeral of George VI in 1952 - Queen Mary, the Queen Mother and Elizabeth II.

Yes, Queen Mary (1867-1953, consort of George V), but also Queen Alexandra(1844-1925, consort of Edward VII).

"Self-conscious about a scar on her neck (allegedly the result of a childhood accident, though others suggest a suicide attempt), [Alexandra] tried to hide it by wearing high choker necklaces and dresses. A strikingly attractive woman, Alix's high necklines started a fashion craze, though few at the time knew the secret behind them."
