A friend of mine bought a USB SD/MMC card reader from Ebay, a Hong Kong seller!! He's trying to use this on a machine running windows 98 but has not got a driver for it. The card reader is not branded so do not know who the manufacturer is. Is there a generic driver that will run the reader under windows 98?

Wouldn't have thought so, if it's unbranded, you can try contacting the seller for advice, though that wioll probably lead to nothign if it's a hong kong seller.
Windows 98 was great for plug and play devices and did support USB, but the technology was new then, and alot has moved on in 9 years, so support for that O/S has ceased now. I woudl advice upgrading to XP as it will recognise the USB drive no problem.
There are driver sites on the net, but alot of them contain malware from what I've heard, and will end up damaging the computer instead of helping you! Perhaps not worth the risk.
