My D600 does exactly the same ( T-Mobile) when it's lost signal for a length of time and seem's to get locked out of signal.
Just switch phone off and back on to reset it.

One possible reason is this: when the high winds came the other day it trashed a few phone masts. My D900 is on orange and i had the same problem intermittently over a couple of days.
Try another network Sim and see what occurs

You're out of credit perhaps or in a weak signal area.

I agree with previous answer - mine kept doing it so I switched it off and back on again and it was OK
