Vaporetti.
The singular is Vaporetto.
They're diesel powered now and are more commonly called water busses, and they're always very crowded. Great fun.

the once "steam-powered" boat is called vaporètto, commonly called vaporìno by the Venetian residents (plural vaporètti and vaporìni). the ones in service are quite old and may look... steam engines, but they have diesel engines. projects are ongoing for electric vaporetti to replace these ones.
