|2x + 3| - 6 = 11
|2x + 3| = 17
For absolute value,
2x + 3 = 17 or 2x + 3 = -17
2x = 14 or 2x = -20
x = 7 or x = -10

Absolute Value means the value of a number, without regard to the negative or positive sign. Another way of looking at it is the absolute distance from zero on the number line, without regard to the direction. In your example, the absolute value of (2x + 3) is simply 2x + 3.

Sometimes it helps if you think of absolute value as "distance" rather than a "value". If you are standing at a point on the side of a road and you are going to walk a certain distance, you can walk to the right or walk to the left.
To figure out absolute value problems, figure out the 2 answers -
1. What would the answer be if the value inside the absolute value notation was positive? In other words, change the absolute value lines into parentheses and solve it as it is written.
2. What would the answer be if the value inside the absolute value notation was negative? In other words, use distributive property to multiply the value inside the lines (not the whole equation) by -1. Then change the absolute value lines into parentheses and solve.

|2x+3| = 17 (add 6 to both sides)
to take out the absolute value:
2x+3= +-17 (2x+3 can equal either positive or negative 17)
2x= -20 or 2x = 14 (subtract 3 from both sides(on right side from both +17 and -17)
therefore
x= -10 or x= 7

Write this
l2x+3l -6 =11
2x+3-6=11 (peel back) 2x+3 + 6 = -11
2x+3=17 2x+3= -17
2x=15 2x= -20
x=7.5 x= 10

first of all there is two answers.
1] l2x+3l - 6 = 11
l2x+3l=17
2x+3=17
2x=14
x=7
Answer # 1: x= 7
2] l2x+3l - 6 = 11
l2x+3l=17
l2x+3l=-17
2x+3=-17
2x=-20
