Its the transmission (gearbox) inner bearing(s) All forward gears are knocking because the bearing is knackered. It goes away in reverse because the main shaft is pushing the opposite way on a good bearing (one at each end) Common problem on rally cars..! The price to repair is more than the cars worth. A second hand gearbox will cost you about £40 and ALL escort boxes are the same, just different bellhousings. These are interchangable (10 mins) so dont be ripped off because its a diesel.

have the motor mounts checked. these cars are prone to break them. since driving forward most of time its usually only in forward gears that they allow noise. reverse torques the motor the other way making it quiet

if you have a knocking sound in your engine your about to sling a rod. If you sling a rod your engine is no good. Do not drive this car until you check the oil and see what has messed up. Could be cracked heads etc.. Get the car to a mechanic.

flywheel maybe??? i had a RWD suburban that did the SAME thing and that was it's problem. does it still do it in park? If not i would start with the flywheel as i am assuming it is automatic. If it is a stick....then i have no clue. Good luck
