sensors are beams of a laser looking at a mirror, if something gets between them they can be programmed to stop something from working

Sensors are machines that can turn changes from the enviroment into an electronic signals. Then, they process the signal, and do what they are programmed to do, eg. sound an alarm, call the police, play music, drink a coke...
