Abba: The blonde?

I've liked Abba for some time now, although I wasn't actually around during the 70s. It's always seemed to me that Agnetha, the blonde woman in the group, got a bit more attention and admiration than the others.

I mean, so often in conversations or in writing about Abba, references to "the blonde one" abound, or even in contexts that have nothing directly to do with the group or even music - for example, comparing someone's appearance to "the blonde one in Abba". Indeed, it seems as though even people who didn't know that much about Abba still knew of "the blonde one in Abba".

I saw a newspaper article, a few years ago, about Abba. Although the article was about the group rather than about any individual member, it carried a smallish photo of the other three members, but a much larger, full-length shot of Agnetha.

What was it that gave Agnetha this extra popularity?

I love Abba , grew up with it in my teens. Lets face it I would much rather see album covers or publicity pics of the ladies than the 2 guys. Very talented songwriters but not as easy on the eyes as Agnetha. Afterall so much of the music industry is the image, just as much or more so than the music itself. I don't know about other people, but when I hear a song I have a mental image of the artist in my mind, for me that was
Agnetha not Bjorn. :)

As others have said, she was blonde with a sexy body - very memorable and so quintessentially Swedish!. Anni-frid (Frida) was lovely, but she didn't have the same sex-appeal as Agnetha. In addition, Agnetha was Abba's youngest member and following a No.1 recording in Sweden when she was only 17, she was also recognised as a talented composer. As well as her own compositions, she'd recorded covers of foreign hits and performed them on tours in Swedish folk parks, establishing herself as one of the most popular Swedish female pop singers of the time. She also received good reviews when she starred as Mary Magdalene in the original Swedish production of Jesus Christ Superstar. As she was so well-established in her home country before Abba, she was, therefore, the natural 'face' for the group.

She was very pretty, and also she had the 'love angle' in that she was married to Bjorn and they had two children. It was well documented that Agnetha didn't like touring and really did not like being parted from her children, I think that aspect of her character appealed to a lot of women, she seems to have that quality that very few female celebrities learn, to be able to appeal to both genders. She wasn't threatening, she was certainly gorgeous, but she also seemed very self deprecating and didn't flaunt her beauty and alienate the groups female fans.

There's always one member of the group who gets more media attention than the others at some point of their career. Another famous blonde who experienced that was Gwen Stepfani. What's she doing now? She's solo! At least Agnetha stayed.
