I doubt it's a box turtle, at least not one native to my area. Looks more like a larger tortoise... spurthigh maybe? Hopefully not a gopher tortoise or anything illegal. It's not sitting like that all the time is it? If it is, there's something wrong with it, maybe calcium defeciency or lack of full spectrum lighting. My suggestion is to find either a turtle specialist in your area, or if you're lucky like me and have a pet store that not only specializes in reptiles but tries to assure that every animal that leaves has the best care possible (A-1 has care sheets for all their reptiles, can't buy one without getting a care sheet) take it there. If there are not turtle specialists/breeders or GOOD pet stores in your area, try a vet.
And we're not just talking 15+ years here, we're talking more like 80+ years here.

First of all why would you buy an animal if you don't know what it is or how to care for it, is there something wrong with you come on people think it's a living thing and you just buy it not knowing what it is or how to care for it. Yo knowu don't even how much it's going to cost to set up the right tank, heat and lighting, plus the food. My suggestion go on the internet, you obviously have it, if you have the time to write this question and have other people do the work you should be doing and research land turtles.

OK, to begin with your turtle that you bought for ten bucks, will cost you no less then $100.00 to set up a (correct) habitat for. You at minimum need two sources of light one for heat, and one to duplicate the sun. Both ARE required! This is some sort of tortise (land turtle) most likely an eastern box turtle or a russian tortise.
Did the people you bought it from not know what it was? Shame on them for not supplying you with the information you need to care for a pet that should live 15+ years. And shame on you for not doing the research first. But, at least you are trying!

Sliders, westerns, cooters , midland, painted, map, yellow bellied all are surely an identical and require an identical undemanding care. they like calcium and protein they get it from the fish meat and the fish bones. Drop 20 or 30 or so feeder guppies or small goldfish (or minnows they in line with danger somewhat rapid for toddlers) on the commencing up purely drop interior the tank and watch them disappear in some days! The extra they eat the fit the turtle. **** If those are hatchlings a a million” and a tad over they might could have their stay foodstuff 0.5 lifeless by utilising leaving the fish out of water for a couple of minutes (10minutes) and put in the tank. That way the little you could nonetheless get the beef he desires and the fish can’t out run the toddler turtle. Plus some leafy green and nutrition A culmination decrease up some circumstances a week. Swollen cloudy eyes comes from loss of nutrition A. Which all of us prefer for sturdy eyes. they are able to have backyard worms which I assemble after a competent rain and sell off them un the pond, additionally meal worms, snails, crickets, flies, crayfish small frogs, slugs, tadpoles ,dragon flies and something that strikes, yet basically as a handle. they like leafy vegetables Romaine, Butter lettuce. (Iceberg and cabbage are undesirable for them, the different leafy vegetables will do) for nutrition A that they like a minimum of four to 5 circumstances a week. They love grapes and strawberries and squash , apples. those turtles in captivity do no longer hibernate their ingesting would decelerate some yet they gained't hibernate. they can't pay attention or see nicely so as that they sense you coming by utilising the vibrations each foot step take. And interior the iciness their appetites decelerate some

1. It IS a tortoise. Not sure of the species- hopefully something like a Greek or Hermanns, like these: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/world_of_turtles/Greek_Tortoises_-_Testudo_ibera/index.html

2. Try other pictures near the above link to try to locate the right tortoise.

3. The sites http://www.austinsturtlepage.com and http://www.tortoisetrust.org.uk have good care info.

4. The other posters are right. It is not uncommon for a good tortoise habitat to run you an easy $100-200 bucks!

5. I would also agree that your poor tortoises does not look great. You'll need to get rock-solid cares going on it pretty darn quick if you want to help it out.

You need to find out what type it is or you cant care for it properly. It looks like a tortoise to me though. They need rather large enclosures, heat and UV lights. What yu need to buy for him will cost a few hundred dollars.

There are alot of turtle rescues you can look up online. I am sure that if you send a picture they can tell you what you have and how to care for it. Without proper care, he wont live long.
