I'm always in the dark when it comes to things like the copyright dates of movies, which Superbowl this is, etc. How do you read and use them? Please give me a quick tutorial!

1 = I
2 = II
3 = III
4 = IV
5 = V
6 = VI
7 = VII
8 = VIII
9 = IX
10 = X
L= 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000
2007 = MMVII
1999 = MCMXCIX
A lower valued symbol preceding a higher valued symbol reuces the value of the preceding symbol. Thus IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, and CM = 900.

Poorly. 1 is I; 5 is V; 10 is X; 50 is L; 100 is C; 1000 is M.

When Roman Numerals are paired with the highest value to the right (for instance, IX), the lowest value is subtracted. In my example, the total value is 9.

When the highest value is to the left (for instance, XI), the values are added. In this example, the total value is 11.

It gets very confusing very fast!

capital i is 1 so II is two, IV is four, capital v is five, four if the I is in front, 6 if the I is behind it.. X is ten.. L is 50...C is 100...D is 500...M is 1,000...
for example...I was born in M+CM+LXXX+IV
= 1000+900+50+30+4 = 1984

the year 2007 would be written MMVII

If a bigger number comes before a smaller number, you add them. If a bigger number comes after a smaller number, you subtract them.

There is no zero.

Actually, Roman numerals did not work very well so the numerical system we have now is from India by way of the Arabs.
