Three books I would recommend for you:

1 - "Making Decisions" by D.V. Lindley, published by John Wiley and Sons. Lindley was Professor of Statistics at University College, London. The book is, by far, the most insightful writings about probability you will find. It starts with wonderful simplicity, and only gets into the more complicated aspects once you are grounded in the basics of the laws of probability.

2 - "Probability and Statistics" by Morris DeGroot, published by Addison Wesley. Like most texts, it begins with the basics, but DeGroot's is the most comprehensive in the mathematics of probability and statistics.

3 - "Bayesian Statistics, Principles, Models, and Applications" by S. James Press, published by Wiley. To be comprehensive in your study of probability and statistics, you must know Bayes. Bayesian probability is the essence of science.

just use the text book that you have now.
if you don't do the hw assignments, you won't know which parts you don't understand.

Usually the first 2-3 chapters are hardest. Once you get thru it (or get used to setting up the problem as a counting game), you are ok.

After all these years, I still get mixed up sometimes, and need to go back to the chapter 2 etc (the basics). I hope it is not aging.
