How long are you going to be gone? They sell this food dispenser at Walmart (if you are from australia, I doubt there are walmarts there, but check fish stores or pet stores). It's this black box thing you attach to your tank and it drops food at certain times during the day. Or, they sell this food pyramid that you place in your tank and it releases small amounts of food or your betta can nibble on it. If you are going to be gone for a long time, consider a heater and a filter so the water doesn't get too dirty. How big is your betta's environment?

if the trips only a week or so just get an automatic feeder. you can get it at walmart for abou 14 bucks. its a lil plactic round thing that turns food in twice a day for the fish. water changing is a must though and its better to have someone be there to monitor him a few minutes everyday to check for stress and other things so maybe get a feeder and take him to a friend or family members and tell them just to remember to clean the tank. im sure they can do that and if they forget when the water starts looking bad theyll think of it. wish there was a better way for this. but a fish on a plane is no go. he needs air, heat. food, and filtration at all times. a drastic temp change will kill him if the stress of that ride doesnt. when transporting fish they need to be in a bad thats dark so they cant see the lights that come randomly and other such thing to stress them out. i dont think airplanes would let you take a fish either ive never heard of it. sorry.

If you are gone for less than two weeks, leave the fish alone. Change the water, make sure the heater is set, and go. Don't feed the fish with an auto feeder because there is the potential that fungus will grow, ammonia will build up, or something else will go wrong while you are gone.

The rules on airlines keep changing, so the only way to be sure is to call the airline that you are flying directly. They will be able to answer correctly.
