Defining Political Courage

“In whatever arena of life one may meet the challenge of courage, whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience – the loss of his friends, his fortune, his contentment, even the esteem of his fellow men – each man must decide for himself the course he will follow.” John F. Kennedy

Courage is complex amalgam of ones ability to overcome fear while simultaneously applying reason and adhering to ones principles. In example A if ones actions did indeed save the fellow soldiers and this was a foreseeable result of this action, then it was courageous. If the fellow soldiers perished anyways, than it lacked criterion adequate reasoning and was more instinctual. In example B if the action was in some way responsible for or contributed to a positive change and the martyr fully comprehended his actions and the outcome it was courageous. If however, as is usually the case, the individual was able to be persuaded of a reward in the hereafter and was merely a pawn of a rival political ideology, then his action was a coerced means to an end. I will not bore you with more analogy. Suffice to say that the courage or lack there of in any action is not easily defined and is very subjective. A persons willingness to face the uncertainty of every day is the simplest and perhaps most profound expression of courage and may be the bench mark by which all other acts may be measured. Thank you and God Bless!

Political Courage is where a Politician makes a move or takes a stance on a subject, when he is convinced that it is in the best interest of his country, even tho it may cost him his job at the next election. The reason it is so hard to define is because it has never been seen to be done!

I could not agree with you more, but 2 excellent examples of Political Courage from the other side of the aisle, ( WE MUST REMEMBER WE ARE AMERCIANS FIRST, REPUBLICANS OR DEMOCRATS SECOND!!)
1) US Senator Joe Lieberman- DEM, supported the Pres. and it cost him the Democratic Nomination for re-election, ran as an idependant an WON!- COURAGE
2) The Late US Sen. Paul Wellstone from Minn. As far left a Liberal as ever walked the planet. I did NOT AGREE WITH HIM ON ANYTHING!! But he never waivered from his beliefs, unfortunately he died in a plane crash during his re-election bid.

While I disagreed with Sen Wellstone, he had the right last name. because he had the STONES to hold his ground and fight for what he believed in. John McCain is another example of Political Courage.

We need more peoplel like these GREAT Americans from both Parties because the only way this country is going to stay the greatest Country on earth is with Leaders who are deeply convicted in their beliefs, and do not tilt in the direction of Polls like the John Kerry's of this World

Political courage is the ability to stand up to someone like Bush who tries to bully everybody into seeing things his way.

There is nothing courageous about Bush. He is merely an arrogant person who refuses to listen to any other viewpoints and who smears the reputations of anyone who disagrees with him.

Yeah he has lead us down a path of near ruin. He has caused every country around the globe to hate us, he has put us in deep debt that will take years to recover from, he is a real winner isn't he??? It took Clinton 8 year to balance the budget, it took GW 2 years to break it. I guess GW has political courage by doing as he wanted without consulting advice from proven leaders. Now look at the mess he has us in. And, he won't lose his fortune.

I agree with you. America for the most part thought Clinton was great for lying about sex in a court of law, and seemed to think it was cute that he was impeached. The Liberals showed themselves to be nimrods, AGAIN. Other examples;
Vietnam war(spitting on soldier's, and bringing down their morale, LBJ starting the war for personal gain ((he made millions)), liberals tried to create Vietnam again in the 1st gulf war (didn't work), trying to make another Vietnam in the Iraq War now, getting liberal ACTORS to protest. George has the strength, and fortitude to stay the course, and hang in there, knowing America is doing the right thing, as the future will show. This will all come out after we get a Liberal president in office, and the liberals see how "their" president screws up our economy again, they will pay higher taxes, and lose more of their freedoms. They're children will be drafted into the war in Iraq, because the Dems don't want it stopped! Wait and see. Remember what I am telling you. It will ALL come true. AGAIN, just like in Vietnam era, the Libs are going to smash our reputation, as a STRONG country, and set us up to be as equally cowardly as countries like Spain. I wish they had a brain.
