We've been informed via a literary web site regarding the novel's popularity in Germany last year. Some readers who read it, please share your ideas or opinions, that is, something like your informal review on it. Moreover, I'd like to hear from some German readers who read its original version too since I would read the English translated version by Carol Brown Janeway; it's German title is "Die Vermessung der Welt". Thanks.

I read the book in German and liked it a lot.
It's about these two scientists, Humboldt who travels through South America to explore the world and Gauss, who stays at home mostly sitting on his desk exploring mathematics.
These characters are very different on the one hand but very much alike as well as they're completely obsessed with their field of work and see nothing else. Humboldt doesn't care much about his travel partner and Gauss is completely unaware of the life his family has to endure on his side.
The book is great in describing these two with a lot of humorous moments. In the end you really get to like these two weirdos.
So you don't have to be a natural scientist at all to appreciate the book. I definitely recommend it!!!
Can't say much about the translation into English though.
