Its the natural rise cycle of pants. As a kid your pants are always falling down...so much so you walk around in a diaper. Then come the early school years when your mother and father control you enough to make your pants stay at the waistline...then comes freedom. Your pants get at their lowest point but still stay up. Gradually the pants will rise. When you're in your 20s to 30s your pants will find the midpoint again with some lapses (there might be an occasional buttcrack problem, especially if you're a plumber). Finally, as you reach middle age, your pants will start to rise past your waistline perhaps ultimately reaching your belly button or nipples (for the very aged). The only known solution to this dilemma is to stop wearing pants all together, which has been known to work wonders for certain individuals.

Rappers started doing that.....I don't remember which one started it but that's where the idea came from. I don't mind pants being baggy or a size bigger but you still have to wear a belt because "crack kills!". I can't stand tight pants on a grown man....but I also can't stand baggy ones that show your boxers.

The "sagging" pants was brought out of jails and it was from the inmates not having belts, but as for the braids, that did not "begin" in jail as SOME would have you believe.. That's part of our heritage, something that started well before we began being jailed.

I work at a state employment agency and I see a lot of that especially in young men. I tell them to grow up and pull up their pants because no one wants to hire a slob.

Jail. Inmates made this popular since they aren't allowed to wear belts. They just carried it over into parole.

According to my high school guidance counselor, it started in prison as a way for male prostitutes to show that they were "available".

From prison. The "girl" men let the other men know that they were willing to trade their a** for cigarettes. It was advertisement for gay sex.
