Think of all the sc fi films that you have watched and think of the things you you thought they where missing that'll give you a start, then develop your characters and worlds etc before you even start a story you'll find after doing this that a story may come easier

With all the scifi out there as a guide, you are hard pressed to come up with the Original idea, take what you like, even if it has been done before, BUT do not copy it! Make it your own, change it, mold it, into something from your self, after all you are different and so will be your creation.

Good Luck I love Scifi, So Say We All

A sci-fi movie is merely location.

Star Wars is nothing more than the myth of a boy learning what it means to be a man through an arduous trip.

In that area, LOTR and SW are the same story.

Work on the story first, as all the special effects in the world cannot cover for a bad story.

What if you took "The Odyssey" and made it a space story? See how this works?

Read a sci-fi book. Then copy the book into screenplay format. Then change the names of the characters with a word processor. Then take out the sections relating to one sub-plot and stick in a different one from a different book, being sure that the character names in it are adjusted to match the other. Toss in an improbable cameo scene of warm-and-fuzzy racial diversity, the subliminal endorsement of whichever softdrink company pays you the most money, and you're done.

This is the "Dr. Martin Luther King" method of writing: plagiarism ostensibly for a lofty moral reason, but really just to make money.

Take some drugs. Imagine. Have a good think about it. Then write it. A Bit like Doulas Adams author of "The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy." (A must read if you haven't already) He says: The art of flying is to run very quickly, jump up into the air, aim at the ground and miss!" Pure fookin Genius!!

Read Orson Scott Card's book 'How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy. It'll help you figure out what kind of story you want to write and how to flesh it out.

One of the best things he suggests in the book is to figure out the kind of story you're writing, meaning you'd focus on the details of the world, or the story of one character where you'd just assume that the reader knows about the world.

take a the principal of a story that you know well and just change the characters and the scenery , for example make Cinderella into the princess of the planet Zonda and she must return home before her ship (carriage) is destroyed by solar rays (rather than it turns into a pumpkin) luckily her prince picks up her signal (instead of her slipper) and rescues her from certain death (or the ugly sisters) he he ! not a very good example but i hope it helps
