Have you ever encountered or experienced a difference in treatment based on how fair or how dark the skin tone of the person? Have you ever noticed your self doing it on a subconscious level?

Yes absolutely!

This mentality stems from the slave days when the lighter skin blacks were the house servants (usually the offspring of the various masters). Some house slaves were secretly educated by the whites. Were as the darker skin slaves were the field slaves and treated as chattle.

In the south, back in the 30's, 40's and 50's in order for blacks to join "black" clubs and groups they had to pass the brown bag test. If a black was darker than the brown bag they were not admitted.

To this day there are some blacks who still subscribe to this idiocy.

It is so obvious that lighter skin is preferred than darker skin, but from my point of view, I really don't understand why? It would seem to me that darker skin is better, as you have better protection from the sun (UVA rays) and also blemishes, scars and rashes show themselves to be less prominent. Personally I prefer dark skin and wish I was darker, I would not want to have light skin and don't believe that it is beautiful.

Nope. But i have heard much about it. I guess it is because I am not paticularly dark or light. I have a medium complexion. I most hear people insulting others because they are dark and it bothers me.

Yes and it's ignorant. It just one of those "part of life" things. It happens in the Black, Latin, and Asian cultures (I'm not sure about other races) and sadly it will never end. You just stay strong and deal with it cuz there are a thousand things more important to deal with. ;-)

I've been fun of at school because I have light skin. Most of the students were either brown or dark brown. But in all honesty, I think they were jealous. *shrug*
