Due to imminent care of our grandchildren, we have to fill in a garden pond sized 6 widex4 longx2.5 feet deep.
Its set into a hole in a paved patio and has a thick plastic liner surround.
It faces south west in the dry climate of East Anglia (UK)
Any brilliant ideas out there on the best way to do this and what you would convert the space to??

I agree that a zen garden would be neat, but I would be more for perserving the pond and supervising the kids. I know it's impossible to keep an eye on multiple children constantly, so consider a fence or other type of barrier that would blend with the garden and keep the kids away from the pond.

I would go to the hardware store and buy a large supply of styrofoam. Layer on the bottom until the hole is left with about 6" of top space. The styrofoam is cheaper than buying soil. The stymofoam will help to retain moisture. Then I would fill the rest of the hole with potting soil. Buy some wilflower seeds and plant a mixture of full sun wild flower seeds for a beautiful flower garden.

Oh what a shame that you cannot keep it. But I certainly understand your concern for the well being of your grandchildren.

I am not exactly sure what it is you were looking for but here are a few suggestions.
1. fill it with sand for the kids to play in.
2. fill with good quality soil. Plant a tree at one end and seed the rest to grass creating your own little oasis.
3. create a beautiful flower garden. There are many plants suited for a dry climate.
4. contact that brilliant television show GROUND FORCE. Perhaps they will help you for free!

They all look like good answers - Drain it , clean it, put a step at one end, put in some small trees in pots around the edge , cushions around the edge and make an outdoor conversation pit.........fill it in and concrete it over, cost you about $100 , for fill and 3/4 yard of concrete , or put pavers with a design if you ever want to recover the pond when the children are older - use it for a fire pit during colder nights - Make a removable cover - one sheet of plywood would cover it and you would still have your pond ....

Instead of taking it out and filling it in, go you your hardware store and buy fencing ( there are different sizes you can get to cover it), place over pond and use rock border to hold fencing use an extra messure drive stakes in the ground for added security ( those little ones can get away from you). As long as everything is camoflauged it will look good and when the kiddies are older it can be taken out.

sounds like you have the perfect opportunity to turn it into a very unique garden accent.

experiment with some designs --- a type of rock garden with different color sand may look attractive.

a desert motif with small cacti may be nice (but weather may be a factor)

if choosing rock-style garden, try to incorporate the use of a few thousand marbles -- very unique and stylish.

how about a small wildflower garden...plant a bag of 500,000 wildflower seeds every year for unique look

how about designing a 'butterfly' garden...plant the flowers butterflies love (or hummingbirds) and enjoy watching them all summer long

ten years from now, you'll be proud of whatever you choose

how about a water garden Its kinda like a pond but its more like a water stream you built it up and the water runs down it in a certain stream and on the sides you plant different kinds of flowers and grassed it's very stunning you still get the effect of water cause it still circulates like a pond but with the flowers it is really eye appealing-there is no standing water just a stream of water over the top of rocks kinda like a waterfall-I've seen few of them in the parade of homes in Billings Montana 2006

Get a mesh cover made to fit the pond that sits just below the water. It will hardly be noticed.Kids are safe and you keep your pond.
Or go with the sand pit and put potted plants around it to look pretty.

Flower bed, of course. Pierce the liner unless you can sell it to someone else, and fill with soil.
Or--why not a sandbox for the kids. They would love the play area.
