Brackish, meaning it can live from fresh water and up to a certain salinity of saltwater. If the store has them in fresh, best to keep them that way or slowly acclimate them to some salinity. They are a high maintenence fish.

The black ghost knifefish, Apteronotus albifrons, is a tropical fish belonging to the ghost knifefish family (Apteronotidae). They originate in South America in the Amazon Basin in Peru and from Venezuela through Paraguay in the Paraná Rivers. They are sometimes found in aquaria.

Because they come from and live in river... that's means Fresh Water

My local tropical fish supplier has ghost knifefish listed as tropical freshwater fish.

they can be both witch ever they where raised in. they come from brackish water in the Amazon
