Are you suprised that the treatments described in source E were being used at that time?

No of course I'm not surprised.

These were still very primitive times before science became established and while most people still took religion seriously.

Just be thankful you live in an age when medical science is so advanced and primitive, superstitious rituals have been down graded though unfortunately still not eradicated.

You should not be suprised because:
1. They believed that there were 4 humour in the body. Blood, black bile, green bile and phelgm. When someone was sick it was thought that one of these humours were out of balance.

The most common treatment up until the 1860's was bleeding because it was thought to fix the humours. This also explains the pills.

2. The oriental Bezoar stone were thought to remove poison from the body. That is why it was placed every hour.

Why should anyone be suprised? Life was pretty tough back then huh! Imagine having to have a tooth out or a limb chopped off without any anaesthetic....Sheesh!!
