epi (above or outside ) dural (the dura is the outer sheath coverig the spinal cord) .Its a form of Local anesthesia , the spinal cord is blocked from transmitting nerve impulses by injecting an anesthetic around the spinal cord , making the person lose all sensation below the level of the block ,while consciousness is maintained (patient is awake) .This has many advantages ,but some side effects or risks .

it is a mild Anastasia that is injected to the lower part of the spinal cord at your back. It is reducing the sensitivity of the nervous system at the area hips down, and thus reduce the pain of delivery contraction. It is NOT meant to be working at the actual delivery but only at the period prior to that. the normal practice is to have the mother fully attend the delivery- and have full control over the mussels and the nerves during the delivery. It is a most common practice in the western world. hazards are not to the infant, only to the mother, as it is foundling with the lower back spinal cord.

My epidural was still dosed at delivery. I had NO idea when to push!... i had to look at the monitor to see when i was having a contraction. (When it's time, you push during contractions) But the epidural was given to me during labor...they can't go stickin your back with needles while your pushing out a baby. I loved my epidural, and plan to get another in September.

The epidural is given during labor. It'll numb the woman from the waist down to help ease the pain of contractions and when it comes time to push the baby out. Speaking from experience, it works sometimes. I had one done, but I had to lay on my right side during contractions because my baby was more comfortable that way, so my left side was partially numb. I felt everything when it came time to push. The epidural needle can be very scary just to look at, but its an easy solution to pain, without having to be somewhat drugged.

Not during delivery time, but during the earlier stages of labor. It's a long needle put directly into the spinal column. It releases certain pain blocking medicine. Makes the person temporarily paralyzed from the waist down. You have no control over you legs and also have no pain. It's wonderful! Also, the needle is taped into your back and attached to a pump to slowly release the medicine until you deliver.

An epidural is what they give you when you are in labour but only up to a certain cm, they also will give you an epidural for other reasons at the hospital. if they are done right it isn't a big deal but they can be very painful!!
Hope this helps!!
