There are three competing formats for writeable DVDs, DVD-R(w) , DVD-RAM and DVD+R(w). A DVD +/ - writer is compatible with both DVD+R and DVD-R formats therefore the + disk should work fine in your writer for recording as wiill a DVD - disk. However you will not be able to record to DVD-RAM disks. It is also backwards compatibles with CDs so you write to CD-R / CR-RW as well.

With the DVD disks you will be able to backup data and record home movies onto DVD for playback on a DVD player.

You will also be able to create audio CDs from playback on your CD player and backup data onto CDs.

However CDs hold less data the DVDs so you can backup more files to a DVD.

You can write data, music, movies, anything on a DVD Disk with a DVD writer.

If you want to back up data then the DVD writer is the way to go because of the large capacity.

You can put all of your mp3s there as it would be hard to fill it up.

You can create movies with a DVD writer.

Best thing to do is put in a dvd in the tray and let the installed software guide you through the options.
