the answer is midas, after doing a favor for bacchus, he granted midas one wish and he wished that anything he touched would be turned to gold. he enjoyed his gift for a while until he sat down to eat and all the food turned to gold and the wine poured like molten metal down his throat. then afterward he hated his gift so bacchus told him to go wash in the river. he did and all the sands that his feet touched turned to gold. afterwards he renounced all wealth and became a hermit and a follower of the god pan. pan challenged apollo to a music contest and midas was a tiebreaking judge and he voted in favor of pan. as retaliation apollo changed his ears to be like a donkeys.

the part about turning his daughter was added later by dryden.
