I would like to add some letters to my court case file from my kids explaining what they want in my current custody case. Do I just bring the letters to the court and ask that they be added to my file or do I have to fill out paperwork, notify the DA, or is it allowed at all?

Depending on your case, I would have your lawyer petition the court to have the judge allow your lawyer turn over the documents to the clerk for him/her to place them in the file.

The procedure is to file a motion to add or amend evidence. All relevant parties are notified and a hearing is scheduled by the court clerk to argue admissibility of the evidence. Within the motion permission to stay the final adjudication pending the hearing of the motion is also presented. This is a fairly straight foreward procedure..
