i thnk that sleeping with eyes open is not evryone's cup of tea, even in a dark room. I believe that open eyes means a conscious mind, and as a result, u cnt sleep. On the other hand, if closing your eyes makes your mind unconscious aftr sumtime and u go to sleep.

When you sleep your whole body relaxes for repairs and such. Every part of your body must relax to sleep, its like a type of meditation or something. When you sleep your ears, eyes, nose, nerves, and taste buds "turn off" relatively speaking. This means that they must have a large stimulus to excite those senses. This is why you might wake up when your alarm goes off or when someone pokes you or when the blinds open. EVERYTHING slows down and relaxes. This is why you must not eat before bed. For a couple of reasons, turning sideways can give you acid reflux, and mainly because your body is in a relaxed sleep and doesn't need calories (energy) to work and thus everything your body is digesting is turned into fats for storage.
Back to the Question: Because your eyes must relax for your body to go into sleep mode, this means that your eyelids must close to relax them.
Plus I don't think you would want to wake up with your eyelids scraping your eyeballs when you blink.

in order to sleep ur brain has to be in a relax state, now if your eyes are open u cannot sleep cause its translating black images in the dark room, usually a dark still image will make ur eyes close anywayz.. unless u still tinkering ur brains with sexual images... xD

If you slept with your eyes open anywhere, your eyes would dry out which is NOT good!. The eyes close to keep them moist and healthy.

Because closing the eyelid relaxes the eye, and the brain. You can't sleep with an unrelaxed brain.
