Rent in a monolocale (studio apartment) is about EUR 450 with electricity and gas. A shared bedroom in an apartment is about EUR 325 with the same bills. Phone, internet and cable are extra. Landlords try to exploit foreigners, so see if you can get a local to help you apartment-hunt.

When I lived in Turin I went out several nights each week, ate in nice restaurants and shopped (at stores like Mango and Zara) often. I usually spent about EUR 950 each month, and saved EUR 250. That's a typical English-teaching salary.

I found the people to be a little bit rude and cold at first, but very kind when they got to know me. There are a lot of racist people in Italy who don't like visible minorities, but luckily I'm white! I would have had a hard time adjusting if I'd looked different.

I've got a personal website about Turin with tips on what to do, where to go and what to avoid. See the link below.

The people are Italian. Turin isn't that expensive compared to other Italian cities (esp the most touristed ones like Rome, Venice, Florence). The old city is nice, and with the Olympics having just been in Turin, there will have been more accomodation built and general municpal improvements. It's a nice place.
