The only war novel I've read was a sort of autobiography. It's called We Were Soldiers Once...and Young. (The movie We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson is based on this nonfiction work.) I really liked it, but it was kind of long and there were lots of military terms I didn't quite understand (such as flanking and whatnot). But I really did end up enjoying it even if I didn't understand the troop movements.

I was gonna say David Gemmell... *cry*
Oh well, the 'Drenai' books I personally found to be the best for the war/fantasy. Legend, King at the Gate, Druss the Legend etc.
Stories of true hardcore honor where heroes drink wine with their enemies on the eve of their defeat in honor of a fallen hero, and duties to people and country. Some fantasy aspects... very very little though. It takes place in a fititious world round the times of Vikings and stuff.
Or the Riftwar saga series by Raymond. E. Feist is a bit more fantasy-ish. The mortal realm is trying to beat back a fey invasion or something to the like. I haven't read them in a long time. Once again, full of honor and duty... but my pick would be the David Gemmell books. Winter Warriors is my favourite; about three old heros; an archer, a swordsman (i think) and a seer who agree to one last mission to protect a princess about to give birth.

There is a david gemmel series that is pretty good. It begins with the novel "The sword in the Storm". The plot basically follows a tragic hero called "Connovar" as he leads a celt-like tribe called the Rigante agaisnt a Roman-like army called the Stone Army. The novels go through the military eras of europe up until the settling of the new world. it is fantasy, with allusions to history.

Charlie Mike is a well written look into the Vietnam War.
Starship Troopers is a futuristic/Sci-Fi book about what war could look like.
