1. A metal container filled with gas Z is placed in ice. What will happen to the pressure of the gas? what will happen to the volume? Why?

2. An infected tooth forms an abscess that fills with gas. The abscess puts pressure on the nerve of the tooth causing a tooth ache. While waiting to see a dentist, the person with a toothache tries to releive pain by treating the infected area with a moist, hot, towel. Will this treatment help? Why, or Why not?

To avoid from getting wrong in your test, you should do more questions before exam. I realise that you might do the questions without thinking deeply and also clear...

1. Try this yourself.. Get a small rectangular gas can (perhaps like the kind they sell Coleman fuel in still) and make sure it is empty.. then put some hot water in it in the bottom about 3 inches deep, close it up and shake it for about 15 seconds. Now empty out the water, close up the can and stick it into some icewater...

If you think about the volume of the gas inside the can, when warm the gas is expanded with lots of energy and fills the container. When you cool off the can (and the gas inside) then the volume tries to decrease (but since there is no way for more gas to come in and replace the lost volume.. the pressure inside the can decreases.. and if you did it right, the can will crush down until the gas inside has enough volume to fill what is left of the can. You can do a simple version of this with a 20 oz plastic coke bottle.. fill it with hot water, empty, close the top, and put it into the freezer for a few minutes.. it will collapse the same way.

2. To reduce the pressure, the patient should be putting ice on the infected area because heat will make it expand even more.

pV = nrT

Question 1:
As T goes down, the p and V side must ALSO go down. Since the container's volume doesn't change, only the p can reduce.

Question 2:
As the T increases due to the warm towel, then the p must increase correspondingly. The V might change a little because it is "soft tissue", but either way, OUCH. Choose a cold compress instead so that the p drops in proportion to the T.

I dont know who answered, or how they got it wrong, but #1 is that the pressure will be reduced, because cooling a gas reduces its volume, and #2 No it wont help because heating a gas will cause the opposite, the volume to increase, hence the pressure goes up and it hurts even more. and it did come out that way...

Are you blaming the people on here for you getting the answer wrong? Yet you haven't learned to do your own work, or to take responsibility for yourself.
I hope nobody even responds to your homework questions.
