512kb is 4 times faster than 128 kb. For your sort of use 128 or 256 kb would be fine. I use 512 because I'm sharing a connection with 2 computers. I'd think you'd only need the minimum as you don't sound as though you use a lot of data. You can always ugrade the speed later as your usage increases.
It has nothing to do with short term memory or RAM.

Depends on your requirements, the KB/s Refers to the number of killerbytes per second it can handle, if you use the same connection, on more than one computer, then the faster the better, if your currently on dial - up internet, to give you a comparison 128kb/s is about 2.5 x faster

512kb is definitely better, but it depends what you want to do with it. if you're into gaming and/or sharing illegal movies/music etc., the faster the better. If you wanna just email and surf, 128kb should be fine.
512kb is theoretically 4 times faster than 128kb

128 KB and 512 KB are amounts of short term memory. It does not have anything to do with dsl speed. If your computer has more short term memory, it will work faster.
DSL is a fast type of internet connection. Cable is even faster.
