I've read from Men's Health that human beings used to sleep in a polyphasic way (poly as in many and phasic as in phrases) rather than monophasic that we are all used to now. It was said that genisus (such as Da Vinci, Napoleon & Einstein) used to sleep in a polyphasic pattern.

This pattern was featured in the magazine because there was a research going on. They want to know how to train astronauts and seamen so that they can be alert at all times. They adopted the method and it seems to work.

The reason is that when we sleep (the usual 8hours routine), we get into "shallow sleep" then into the REM sleep aka deep sleep which is the period of the sleep where the most repairing and restorative part of the sleep. But the REM sleep only starts a few hours after you fall asleep, and it only last a while. But by adoping polyphasic sleep, (as the book shows) you sleep for 20mins each time at every 12pm, 4pm, 8pm, 12am, 4am & 8am. According to the book, the 1st 2 weeks are very grueling as your body is not used to it. But once it is over, you will be as super as ever. The reason being that every time you sleep, you will fall asleep into REM sleep.

If you think logically, you actually realised that man was made this way. Imagine ancient man, the time when they are still hunters and gatherers. they do not sleep 8hours one shot. Won't this endanger their lives because danger is 24/7. But if they took turn to sleep at phases, they can get rest and also be alert when the need arise for them to move.

This is what i thought that might be useful to you. Check it out la, it might not be the ultimate solution to your sleep problem, but it is interesting enough to be brought up as an answer to your question.

Sorry doode, nothing for it but more shut-eye. To bed earlier OR sleep later, only answers. Best is 8 hours but some need as little a 7 or much as 9. Stop fighting nature or one day you'll drop off behind the wheel and hurt someone! Get those zzz's

If you feel drowsy during the day or show other symptoms of sleep deprivation, you need to sleep for more hours or take naps in the day so that you feel refreshed.

Power naps are a good way to recharge your batteries and keep you going.
