Mount Vesuvius, pronounced, vuhSOOveeuhs, is the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe. It the most famous volcano in the world. It rises on the Bay of Naples, about 7 miles southeast of the city.

Its rim is the shape of a cone, a big crater, formed when the top of the mountain collapsed in the eruption of A.D.79.

The first recorded eruption occurred on August 24, A.D. 79, when the cities of Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Sabiae were covered by ashes and lava.

In 472, ashes poured from the crater in such great amounts that they carried by win as far as Istanbul, Constantinople then.

The greatest destruction in recent years occurred in April 1906 when several towns were destroyed.
